THE WORK

Sookie Brarou is a collage artist based in Brussels, Belgium. An integral aspect of her body of work is first and foremost surrealism. Each piece intends to project the observers in improbable scenes, which look like a postcard from another dimension or a projection in the future. The notions of terrestrial scale, gravity and perspective are questioned through themes such as climate change, the space race, and femininity. Her collages are made out of stock pictures, which are reworked digitally.  The creative process of each of them is invariably unique, in the sense that cuts, scales and hues were rethought until their image fragments feel like they were meant to be assembled.

Silkscreen printing

As for many digital artists, Sookie has often missed the “manual bond” with her digitally-formatted work. For this reason, she decided to experiment with various ways of translating it onto its physical support and silkscreen printing became her favorite. The prints are prepared using four colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) and manually performed on a high-quality 300g matte finish paper. Each piece is dated, signed and comes with COA (certificate of authenticity).

Why is silkscreen printing so special?

Silkscreen printing is a printing technique where ink is transferred onto a surface by using a mesh. A blade is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate momentarily along a line of contact. One color is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicolored image or design.

Prints on wood

Printing artworks on wood allows to enhance any original design in ways that are impossible with printing on paper. In areas of lighter color, the wood grain shows through the ink, adding a subtle feel and  allowing unique imperfections of the grain and random knots to be seen. On the other hand, areas with darker colors take on a more dramatic tone and show a heavy contrast between the artwork and the organic wood material.

Depending on the tint of the wood, one or many layers of white ink are applied before the actual colors. The prints are made using a UV printer.

The regular prints

Sookie also performs regular prints on paper using high performance inkjet printers. The prints are available in a wide variety of formats  and come with a protective wooden frame.

Collage Art

My practice of collage started as a school assignment, then it became a hobby and, with time, it ended up becoming a powerful tool to express my opposition toward norms and conventions.
